Hints You Are Dealing With a Scammer

How should a consumer know if they are being contacted by or engaging with a scammer? Here are some common hints that may set off the scam alarm:

  • You are contacted via text or social media.  Look for verified emails and calls instead.

  • The scammer will create a sense of urgency. Their 'do it now' attitude is meant to distract you.  Instead - stop, think, say no.

  • The scammer will request your gift card number and PIN/CVV code.  Real card vendors will ask for alternative identifiers.

Common Scam Attempts

Now that you have some hints about the behavior of scammers, let's go over some of the most frequent attempts seen in the world of gift cards.

  • Scammers contact you claiming you need to pay fees via gift card.  They may say they're a government entity or utility company, or you have won a contest, and you need to pay fees. Remember no official entity will request payment via gift card.

  • Scammers claim they are a friend or family member requesting money urgently. A typical example is a medical emergency or bail money.

  • Scammers are using fake websites.  This tricks customers into activating or checking their balance only for scammers to take the funds themselves.

  • Scammers using third-party sites and apps with offer deals too good to be true. Remember, if it's too good to be true, it usually is.

Best Practices to Avoid Scams

Wondering how to protect yourself from gift card scams? While the following list isn't all-inclusive, it is a great start and will help keep those scammers at bay.

  • Only buy from reputable sellers.  Direct vendors like Vanilla Gift, Mastercard Gift Card, The Gift Card Shop, and Ameican Express Gift Card are reputable parties and serve customers daily. Legitimate sellers will have customer service teams and product guarantees for consumer protection.

  • Inspect cards before purchasing at retail locations. Make sure protective stickers and packaging are not tampered with. If you suspect tampering, alert a store employee, and choose a different item.

  • Always keep a copy of your receipt.  Transaction details can help if a scam is attempted.

  • Verify the website URL when shopping for and activating gift cards. Check for URL misspellings, make sure the site is a HTTPS:// URL, and look for lock icons that are in the browser.

  • Never give your card number and PIN/CVV to anyone. Enough said!

The Final Scoop

Scammers are everywhere, but with diligence and critical thinking, you can minimize the risk of a scammer getting your funds. Follow the best practices mentioned above, and if you ever have doubts about someone contacting you about your gift card, call the number located directly on your card to verify.

If you are scammed, you should immediately contact the vendor from which you bought the card to inform them what has happened. The vendor may be able to put a hold on the card of notify you if the funds have been taken from the account. Alerting the proper authorities, like the Federal Trade Commission and the Internet Crime Complaint Center, is also recommended.
